Yamakawa Rattan

Founded in 1952,

Japan

Yamakawa Rattan (ヤマカワラタン) is a Japanese manufacturer, specializing in rattan furniture as their name suggests. They work with some of the greatest designers, such as Isamu Kenmochi (1912-1971), since their creation and they manufacture some icons.

A family business

Hichiro Yamakawa founded Yamakawa Rattan in 1952 in a storage room in the backyard of their home in Tokyo. Two of his sons were partially deaf but very hand-gifted. So it was an opportunity to start a family work & build a future for his children.
Yuzuru Yamakawa, a son fortunate not to have the handicap as his brothers, joined the company to help at managing the business during the day. But he also studied at design school during night: Yamakawa Rattan became a leading company as design editor in Japan, oriented in rattan & bamboo furniture, thanks to Yuzuru Yamakawa’s skills, both in economy & conception fields.

Rattan to shine

Rattan is an early and obvious choice for the company. It’s a local material particularly interesting both to its technical properties and its ecological qualities.
The company manufactured one of the most famous furniture series in Japan: the “Rattan Furniture” by designer Isamu Kenmochi, is a symbol of Japanese design. The set includes sofas, tables, stools and armchairs combining company’s two materials – bamboo and rattan – for a perfect comfort, and a perfect ode to tradition and modernity.

Yamakawa Rattan is a family business specializing in rattan furniture and producing with a sustainable process. They deliver comfortable designs, between tradition and modernity, a tribute to Japan.
